The 7th Scientific Conference of the K.E.F.I.- Athens Association of Cancer Patients and Friends titled “Cancer can be defeated ” was held on Sunday, November 28, 2010 in “Park Hotel”. Professor Dimitrios Linos was among the invited speakers presented about thyroid cancer.
In his speech Dr.Linos discussed about the function of the thyroid gland referred to the most common thyroid diseases and their diagnosis. Regarding Thyroid cancer he outlined the risk factors, symptoms of different types of cancer (papillary, follicular, anaplastic and myeloid) and methods of treatment. He also referred to the symptoms of primary lymphoma of the thyroid which occurs very rarely and on lymph node metastases.
Dr.Linos thoroughly explained the surgical treatment of thyroid diseases and in particular the near total thyroidectomy. He referred to the robotic-assisted thyroidectomy which allows the thyroid to be removed without an incision in the neck and presented the new method’s benefits and contraindications.
Closing his speech Dr.Linos stressed the importance of prevention, treatment and monitoring of thyroid cancer.
