The 1st National Conference of the Forum of Public Health and Social Medicine was held on 25-27 November at the hotel «Divani Caravel» in Athens, Greece. Guest speaker, Professor Dimitrios Linos, presented the new techniques for the surgical treatment of obesity.
In his lecture, Professor Linos outlined the health consequences of obesity and defined “Bariatric Surgery”, explaining the specific patient criteria required for the surgical treatment of obesity.
He then talked about the most common surgical techniques, such as the adjustable gastric banding (gastric band), the gastric bypass and the sleeve gastrectomy. He also referred to two novel surgical methods, the Ileal Interposition (IT) and the Duodenal-Jejunal Bypass (DJB).
Professor Linos discussed in more detail what can be achieved with bariatric surgery, highlighting the improvement of type 2 diabetes melitus.
Finally, Professor Linos stressed the need to have a specialized medical team to provide the comprehensive care to a bariatric patient, as well as the importance of having a highly experienced surgeon.
